A member of the Notre Dame Board since 1975, Wilmouth received an honorary degree from the University in 1984 and served as chairman of its Badin Guild from 1992 to 1999. His gift established the Wilmouth Library Endowment, and he provided funding for a variety of other University initiatives.He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen, and is survived by four sons, a daughter and seven grandchildren. His children all are Notre Dame graduates. Our prayers are with his family and friends.

The $11.5 million project funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will help us better understand the genes responsible for drug resistance and virulence in the malaria parasite in order to reduce and ultimately eliminate the deadly disease.

Members of the Notre Dame family have made a generous gift to the University to establish the Hank Aaron Chasing the Dream Scholarship as part of the Fighting Irish Initiative for student aid. Aaron attended an event on campus in recognition of the gift earlier this month. He was awarded an honorary degree in 2005.

Terrence McGlinn was a Trustee since 1994, and also served as a Fellow of the University. He previously served on the advisory council for Mendoza College of Business. McGlinn and his wife, Barbara (Bobbie), were co-benefactors of the Mendoza College of Business and made a gift to underwrite the construction of McGlinn Hall. We mourn his passing, and we hold Bobbie, their children, other family members and friends in our prayers.

Economics professor James Sullivan says that if you look at the official poverty rate many would conclude that the War on Poverty has been lost, but improved measurements from Notre Dame and the University of Chicago show that poverty in the U.S. has fallen by 27 percentage points in recent decades.

Meet Megan Crowley, a student with Pompe Disease who wasn't supposed to survive past age 2. Her father co-founded a company to work on a life-saving medication for her and her brother (also diagnosed with Pompe). When learning to walk again, many incomplete spinal cord patients initially respond to treadmill training, only to reach a point at which no further progress is made. Notre Dame professor James Schmiedeler is focusing on solving this problem of recovery plateau using a biped robot.He and a team of researchers at Ohio State University believe the answer may center on training the control mechanisms the body uses during the impact phase of walking. Schmeideler’s biped robot provides a platform on which different walking control strategies can be readily tested, with the insights gained from those experiments informing the OSU team’s efforts to develop improved therapeutic techniques.

Jenkins and the presidents of four other Catholic universities discussed the legacy of the Land O'Lakes Statement on Tuesday night.“The role of the Magisterium is to speak with clarity on the teachings of the faith,” he said, “The role of universities is to offer clarifying questions. When Christy Burgess started the Robinson Shakespeare Company in 2008, the idea of the youth acting troupe one day performing in England would have been laughed off as an impossible dream. This summer, 14 South Bend school kids from age 12 to 18 did just that. They spent eight days tracing Shakespeare’s cultural influence from his birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon to his theatrical home in London.The Robinson Community Learning Center and Notre Dame are fighting for Shakespeare for all. Fr. Jenkins: "A decision to discontinue DACA would be foolish, cruel and un-American. Foolish because it drives away talented people the country needs; cruel because it abandons people who have done nothing wrong and have known life only in the United States; and un-American because we have always welcomed immigrants to our land of opportunity.In coming days, I hope to meet with congressional leaders to argue for a permanent fix to this pressing problem. In the meantime, Notre Dame will continue to support DACA students financially, maintain their enrollment even if Congress fails to act and provide expert legal assistance should it become necessary."
