A familiar name to any grade school library, E.B. White tried his hand at children's literature and came out of the gate with two bangers: Stuart Little and Charlotte's Web. The latter is often cited as the best children's book of the century — if not of all time — perhaps because its adaptations, including a curious 2006 video game, have never overshadowed the book itself. Possibly best known of those adaptations is this 1973 cartoon that followed the spectacular Wilbur (Henry Gibson) as he finds his way through barnyard politics and tricky spots with the assistance of Charlotte (Debbie Reynolds), a caring and literate spider. Michael Haneke's most notorious provocation, Funny Games spares no detail in its depiction of the agony of a bourgeois family held captive at their vacation home by a pair of white-gloved young men. In a series of escalating "games," the sadistic duo subject their victims to physical and psychological torture over the course of a night. A home-invasion thriller in which the genre's threat of bloodshed is made stomach-churningly real, the film ratchets up shocks even as its executioners interrupt the action to address the audience, drawing queasy attention to the way that cinema milks pleasure from pain and stokes our appetite for atrocity. True crime and the TV movie were familiar companions, and the rise of sensationalized trials (and access to their footage) made for a string of ripped-from-the-headlines adaptations during the early 1990s. While attending Saint Mary's in the mid-1960s, Betty Bisceglia (Meredith Baxter) met her future husband, Dan Broderick (Stephen Collins), who was studying to become a medical doctor at Notre Dame. Eventually the two married and relocated to San Diego, where Dan became a high-profile attorney. Sacred Music Notre Dame, the Singing Irish of Sacred Music at Notre Dame, members from the Notre Dame Children's Liturgical Choir, and the Sacred Music Festival Orchestra perform Haydn's The Creation (1798). Drawing from the books of Genesis, Psalms, and John Milton's epic Paradise Lost to represent the six days of creation, Haydn was inspired to compose his first oratorio, now an iconic Western masterwork, after a Handel festival including Messiah. Many ways exist to give shape to the phenomenon that was Frozen, from the $1,250,000,000 it grossed at the box office to its fast adaptation to a theme park ride and Broadway musical. Perhaps most telling is the sheer volume of folks who can sing the soundtrack with little baiting. As such, our screening will be the sing-along version of Frozen so warm up those pipes for a group karaoke experience. Nothing else is added to the story known well other than the lyrics as subtitles; it's still sisters Anna (Kristen Bell) and Elsa (Idina Menzel) trapped in an unending winter with Anna venturing with Kristoff (Jonathan Groff) and friends to break the spell keeping them below zero. Christopher Holman presents eight centuries of organ music from the Roman Catholic tradition, performed on the tremendous Murdy Family Organ in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart in broadly chronological order. From the earliest written keyboard music (Robertsbridge Codex, c. 1360) through British composer Caitlin Harrison's 2022 chorale prelude on the Dominican Order's Salve Regina, the program will feature music by J.S. Bach, Charles-Marie Widor, Dieterich Buxtehude, Sor María Clara de Oaxaca, Elisabeth Lutyens, works from the time of the American Revolution, and more, demonstrating how the organ, as Widor famously said, can truly bring about a "vision of eternity." This event is free to attend and not ticketed.

Known as a master of homage and genre, director Peter Strickland has focused on Jess Franco with his The Duke of Burgundy and James Bidgood with his Black Narcissus. What seems to be Strickland's fastball, though, is channeling his love for and appropriating Italian giallo films. As he would later do in In Fabric, which is essentially Suspiria set at a Macy's, Strickland quotes giallos while adding his own notes of camp and extremes. Here, an English foley artist (Toby Jones) is brought to Rome to complete the sound for an Italian horror film in 1970s Rome. Completing the jobs, however, may cost him both his sanity and his life. Inspired by the films of Ingmar Bergman and the Mary Kay Letourneau scandal, May December has at its core the details of the teacher-student relationship with a dollop of Natalie Portman bringing Persona into the mix. The film follows Elizabeth (Portman), an actress performing background research for a film about Gracie (Julianne Moore) and Joe (Charles Melton), who are now married after their relationship began when she was 36 and he was 13. As Elizabeth probes the marriage for inspiration for her film, she begins to realize what rests under the surface for both Gracie and Joe is far more complicated than she expected. GET TICKETS
