Jarek Nabrzyski has been named executive director of Cyber SMART, a U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) Industry-University Collaborative Research Center (IUCRC). Cyber SMART stands for Science, Management, Applications, Regulation, and Training, and the center fosters a holistic approach to cyber research and training.

Nabrzyski, the director of the University of Notre Dame’s Center for Research Computing (CRC), concurrent professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Vice President for Research Fellow, and co-Principal Investigator for the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) CI Compass center. His previous roles with Cyber SMART include serving as Site Director for Notre Dame and as Lead Researcher in distributed ledger technology (DLT), artificial intelligence (AI), and digital forensics.

“Cyber SMART is in a unique position to make changes in the local South Bend area and across the world in the international cyber community. Working in computer science to address issues that impact the global community means we can address local issues with this work, as well,” said Nabrzyski. “Being a center site leader, and now executive director, will position the CRC and Notre Dame in a greater position to lend our expertise to a broad spectrum of issues cyber can help solve.”

Nabrzyski’s research within the CRC focuses on distributed ledger technologies and AI safety. He co-directs the Blockchain Research Lab. He is co-PI in the NSF CI Compass center, which provides expertise and support to cyberinfrastructure practitioners in the NSF Major Facilities.

Nabrzyski received his Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science and Engineering from the Poznan University of Technology, Poland, focused in operations research and distributed systems.
