- Apr 1711:00 AMNotre Dame Seminars on Sustainability: New interdisciplinary frontier—metacoupling framework for addressing global sustainability challengesJianguo "Jack" Liu, the Rachel Carson Chair in Sustainability, University Distinguished Professor at Michigan State University, and founding director of the Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability, will join the Notre Dame community to discuss how global sustainability challenges, such as biodiversity loss, climate change, deterioration of ecosystem services, environmental injustice, are increasingly shaped by human–nature interactions among places. This seminar introduces the metacoupling framework, which integrates human–nature interactions within and across adjacent and distant places. It also presents the framework’s applications to address sustainability challenges worldwide. Professor Liu is a pioneer in systems integration for global sustainability. He is an elected member of the American Philosophical Society, the National Academy of Sciences, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Notre Dame Seminars on Sustainability Series is a signature lecture series organized by the Just Transformations to Sustainability Initiative that brings global sustainability leaders and world-class scholars to campus for knowledge sharing and engagement with the Notre Dame community. About Just Transformations to Sustainability As sustainability challenges intensify, their cascading effects on food, energy, water, and infrastructure increasingly threaten the well-being and dignity of people worldwide. Notre Dame’s Just Transformations to Sustainability Initiative is the University’s far-reaching response to these urgent threats. Inspired by Pope Francis’s landmark encyclical Laudato si’ (On Care for Our Common Home), the Initiative brings together interdisciplinary scholars, dedicated students, and action partners from around the world to advance transformative solutions for a more just and sustainable future. - Apr 2411:00 AMNotre Dame Seminars on Sustainability: Katharine SudingDr. Katharine Suding, a distinguished professor in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department at the University of Colorado Boulder and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, will join the Notre Dame community to discuss her research on resilience, ecosystem recovery, and climate adaptation. For years, we’ve been told a familiar story: a planet racing toward disaster, with problems so vast they feel hard to address. These are global scale challenges, and global scale science is essential. Yet, in this talk, Dr. Suding will argue that it’s not the whole story: real tests of scientific understanding also happen in the places we live. By grounding big ideas in local action, we focus on what we can restore, rebuild, and reimagine close to home. This is an important shift towards practical optimism, community-driven momentum, and sustainable pathways forward. She will share how forgotten orchards of century-old apple trees reveal the resilience tucked inside neglected landscapes — and how restoring them can revive not just an ecosystem, but a piece of community connection. In fire-prone grasslands, she will show how thoughtful action can lower fire risk by rebuilding plant communities that hold moisture, interrupt fine fuel buildup, and slow the spread of destructive wildfires. Likewise, efforts to reintroduce buffalo become far more than wildlife management — it’s a return to relationships, to Indigenous stewardship, and to the ecological networks that once shaped the prairie. - May 96:30 PM🐸 Frog Fest 2026The Reflecting Pool across from Touchdown Jesus may look calm during the day, but on warm summer nights, it comes alive with frogs. Join Notre Dame’s Biology Graduate Student Organization for the third annual Frog Fest, a family-friendly evening celebrating nature, science, and a unique tradition. Families of all ages are invited to campus to enjoy interactive science activities, lawn games, free food, a raffle, a visit from the Potawatomi Zoo, and plenty of frogs. The evening begins with an ice cream truck, lawn games, and hands-on science demonstrations hosted by more than 10 science clubs, labs, and organizations across Notre Dame, including the Museum of Biodiversity, the Biology Graduate Student Organization, the Association for Women in STEM, and more. Attendees can also take part in a mini vivarium-building workshop, sponsored by Josh’s Frogs, and enter a raffle to win a full-sized vivarium and a voucher for a White’s treefrog. As the sun sets, the event moves to the Hesburgh Library Reflection Pond, where gray treefrogs gather along the water’s edge during the summer season. Guests will have the opportunity to learn about and observe Notre Dame’s frogs up close alongside herpetologist and Ph.D. candidate and Gracie Hedgpeth. Gracie will share how scientists study and protect these campus residents and discuss the importance of amphibians and amphibian conservation.
