Mentor Up: Achieving Independence and Seeking Professional Development
The goal in any mentoring relationship is for the mentee to achieve independence and defining whatindependence looks like in a particular field and at various career stages is essential. Professionaldevelopment activities are critically important to developing independence and to your long-termsuccess. This session is designed to provide scholars the knowledge and skills to: 1) identify thebenefits and challenges of achieving independence; 2) understand how the core element ofindependence change over the course of a mentoring relationship; 3) learn how to define theprofessional development needed and find opportunities; and 4) balance the competing demands,needs, and interests of mentors and mentees.
