European Larch
The European larch is another tree that loses its needles in the fall after they have turned golden yellow. It is therefore an unusual conifer, as it is deciduous and drops its needles, making the tree appear as a needled evergreen in the summer. It’s best noted for its soft green foliage that turns golden yellow in fall before dropping. Its needles appear in tuft-like clusters of 12-40 and its reddish brown, small cones are covered with brown hairs. The tree can grow from 60-100 feet tall with a pyramidal shape, horizontal branching and drooping branchlets. Its shape becomes broader and more irregular with age. The bark is scaly, furrowed and reddish brown. This tree is an important timber tree in Europe, being native to cooler mountainous regions in Europe from the Alps to Carpathians.
