This tree is native to Europe to Asia. It was introduced to the U.S. in the 1750s-60s after being cultivated in England since the 1600s. The Norway maple is not affected by smoke or dust and has a high tolerance for shady environments. It therefore is able to thrive in city conditions and often escapes and outcompetes native species. Norway maples are considered invasive by some and therefore planters should be cautious of introduction.
