Swamp White Oak
There are two of these trees, recently planted in front of the Main Building, mirroring one another across the sidewalk. Swamp white oaks have attractive peeling bark, especially on younger trees. The lobed leaves have a two-toned appearance, with dark green on top and a silvery-white underside. In fall, the color changes to an orange-gold or yellow. This oak is found in low-lying and swampy areas, most often moist bottomlands or river banks. However, as it is tolerant to compacted soil and drought, it also grows in more urban areas.
