The A&L Inclusion & Belonging Committee, in partnership with the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center (DPAC), invites you to join a summer community cinema capsule course. Sponsored by DPAC, this series showcases complex stories on gentrification, race, and accessibility that provide insight into the multitudes of human experiences. The program focuses on how to be more attentive film viewers by unpacking the filmic techniques used to tell those stories and discuss how those stories hit experiences on campus and in the community. Each film will begin with a brief introduction and be followed by a discussion led by Cinema Program Director Ricky Herbst with different local experts each week. For our last concert of the summer, we are welcoming the Javier Red Quartet to the Terrace. In his new quartet, Javier Red is composing for and making music with Dakarai Barclay (trumpet), Jake Wark (tenor sax), Jeff Wheaton (bass), and Daniel Gayden (drums). The quartet serves as a vehicle for musical exploration along three lines: the rhythmic pulse and repetition rooted in West African music traditions, the creative personalities of the band members, and the continual reinvention or reinterpretation of both Javier's original compositions and music from great jazz composers such as Monk, Henderson, Coltrane, and Shorter that have a special connection with Javier's rhythmic explorations. Museum galleries will be open so you can explore the work of art paired with the performance. Series curated by Stephen and Mary Merriman of Merrimans’ Playhouse. Parking is available in the Visitor Lot immediately north of the Sculpture Park for a fee during the week (before 4:30 p.m.).
