- Apr 284:00 PMCore Samples: A Climate Scientist’s Experiments in Politics and MotherhoodJoin Dr. Henderson as she explores what it means to research climate science while becoming a mother, and how this ultimately led her into politics and public art. Humanity navigates the world through stories, shaping our understanding and driving our actions. This event, inspired by Anna Farro Henderson's insightful book, Core Samples, delves into the profound potential of narrative to galvanize action on climate change. Henderson's work, a unique blend of personal essays rooted in her experiences as a climate scientist and policy expert, reveals the human dimensions of scientific research, political negotiation, and the systemic challenges faced by women and mothers in these fields. Through vivid storytelling – from far-flung scientific expeditions to intimate moments in labs and legislative halls – Core Samples illuminates the often-messy realities behind climate science and policy. This event will explore how embracing these authentic, human-centered narratives can bridge the gap between scientific understanding and public engagement, fostering the empathy, connection, and urgency necessary to accelerate meaningful climate action. By examining the power of personal experience, scientific discovery, and political realities as told through compelling stories, we aim to inspire new approaches to communicating climate change and mobilizing collective will for a sustainable future. - May 1812:00 AMDeadline for Submissions (Extended): Contributions for the National Sustainability Society ConferenceBalancing social, economic, and environmentally sustainable practices requires revolutionary action. While climate change, biodiversity loss, socio-political polarization, pollution, public health, and other related issues remain vital concerns, no outcomes are predetermined. Through individual initiatives and collaborative efforts in the near and distant future, humanity is still capable of both mitigating or even reversing adverse trends. A just and sustainable future is within our power. The second Annual National Sustainability Society (NSS) conference, taking place at the University of Notre Dame, welcomes those in academia, industry, nonprofits, and governments to come together and share contributions that focus on transformative change for a just and sustainable future. The NSS especially encourages submissions from emerging scholars and early career professionals. NSS considers contributions that showcase both research and application. Scholarship on sustainability topics, work featuring case studies, best practices, collaborative interdisciplinary or cross-sectoral projects, or other works that connect to the NSS conference themes are welcome. NSS welcomes panel discussions, symposia, individual presentations, flash talks, posters, spark sessions, and workshop contributions on the following sub-themes:Putting sustainability research to work Fostering collaboration for a just and sustainable future AI for (or against?) sustainability Cultivating transformative change in agriculture Moving forward with sustainable transportation Transforming the future of sustainability through the humanities Spirituality as a catalyst for sustainability transformation A just and circular futureFor complete theme descriptions, submission guidelines, key dates, and other information, please visit the NSS website.
