Zama (Daniel Giménez Cacho) is colonial middle management, working for the Spanish Crown in South America. He waits and plots and then waits and plots more for a letter from the king that will grant him a transfer from his remote town, in which he is stagnating, to a better place. He is forced to submissively accept every task entrusted to him by successive governors, who come and go as he stays behind, and unsurprisingly displaces that frustration on indigenous people.
