Mentoring Up: Achieving Independence and Seeking Professional Development

    The goal in any mentoring relationship is for the mentee to achieve independence and defining whatindependence looks like in a particular field and at various career stages is essential. Professional developmentactivities are critically important to developing independence and to your long-term success. This session isdesigned to provide scholars the knowledge and skills to: 1) identify the benefits and challenges of achievingindependence; 2) understand how the core element of independence change over the course of a mentoringrelationship; 3) learn how to define the professional development needed and find opportunities; and 4)balance the competing demands, needs, and interests of mentors and mentees.
