<p><i>The goal in anymentoring relationship is for the mentee to achieve independence, and definingwhat independence looks like in a particular field and at various career stagesis essential. Professional development activities are critically important todeveloping independence and to your long-term success. This session is designedto provide scholars the knowledge and skills to: 1) identify the benefits andchallenges of achieving independence; 2) understand how the core element ofindependence change over the course of a mentoring relationship; 3) learn howto define the professional development needed and find opportunities; and 4)balance the competing demands, needs, and interests of mentors and mentees.
