The opening of Sorin Hall in 1889 was a milestone for both Notre Dame and Catholic higher education. It marked the first time the university had a separate dormitory building, and it offered private rooms, which had been unheard of in a Catholic college or university. Prior to its opening, students lived in the Main Building. It is a men's residence.
