2023 Catholic Social Tradition Conference: "Justice Sown in Peace⁠—Celebrating 60 Years Since Pacem in Terris"

The exhibition features books printed in Ireland from the early twentieth century to this past decade, showing the development of Irish book art over the century. A recurring theme, particularly in early publications, is the influence of early Irish art forms in the various design and decorative elements of the books. The selection of fonts, illustrations, and decorative styles were carefully considered by the printers and publishers, and this small variety of books demonstrates various aspects of the art of printing and book design practiced in Ireland. The facsimile Book of Kells is on display, as this and other illuminated manuscripts are a touchstone of sorts for book art in Ireland, particularly at the time of the Irish Literary Revival and the Irish Language Revival. Publishing houses featured in the exhibit include the Dun Emer Press and Cuala Press, Colm Ó Lochlainn’s Sign of the Three Candles Press, Liam Miller’s Dolmen Press, and the contemporary Stoney Road Press and Salvage Press. While the books in this exhibit cover a range of subjects from industry to ornithology, most are literary works, and a number of the books are editions of texts from Gaelic literature, including Thomas Kinsella’s translation of Táin Bó Cuailgne (The Tain), illustrated by Louis le Brocquy. The selection exhibited represents only part of the very extensive collection of important Irish printing presses held by the Hesburgh Libraries. To celebrate Black History Month (February) and Women’s History Month (March) Rare Books and Special Collections highlights several 1970s feminist magazines that introduced a wider audience to African American women in sports, politics, and contemporary culture. This exhibit is curated by Rachel Bohlmann, curator of American history, and Greg Bond, curator of the Joyce Sports Research Collection. Register HereAliyeh Ataei is an Iranian-Afghan author and screenwriter whose books have won major literary awards, including Mehregan-e-Adab for Best Novel. Ataei was born in 1981 and grew up in Darmian, a border region between South Khorasan Province of Iran and Farah Province of Afghanistan. Growing up in Iran as a female minority, she experienced a lot of discrimination and difficulties which led her to work as a women`s rights activist. Her works are deeply influenced by her observations and experiences as a child. She graduated from high school in Birjand and went to Tehran to continue her studies in Tehran University of Art where she received her B.A. and M.A. in screenplay writing. Ataei dedicated most of her focus to writing about immigration. In addition to publishing books, she has been working with several magazines such as Hamshahri, Tajrobeh, and Nadastan. Her short stories have also been translated and published in several American and French magazines such as Michigan Quarterly Review, Kenyon Review, and Guernica. Ataei`s collection of personal essays, entitled Kursokhi in Persian, is currently being translated into French and is set to be published by Gallimard publishing House in 2023.  Atiq Rahimi, born in Kabul in 1962, is a French-Afghanistani writer and filmmaker. In 1984, Rahimi’s family went into exile, and after studying at the Franco-Afghanistani lycée, he joined his father in Bombay. In 1979, he returned to Afghanistan to read literature at the University of Kabul, and worked as a cinema critic. In 1984, he relocated to Pakistan for a brief period, before seeking political asylum in France. He completed his PhD in audio-visual communications at the Sorbonne, and began writing Earth and Ashes in 1996. After 18 years in exile, Atiq Rahimi returned to Afghanistan in February 2002 and helped establish an Afghanistani writers’ centre in Kabul, with the assistance of the French government. Rahimi is the recipient of a number of prestigious literary and film awards. In 2004, he won the Prix du Regard vers l’Avenir at the Cannes Film Festival and a Golden Dhow award for Best Feature Film at the Zanzibar International Film Festival for his film version of Earth and Ashes. In 2008, he was awarded the Prix Goncourt for The Patience Stone – France’s highest literary honour. Rahimi directed 2012 the film adaptation of The Patience Stone from a screenplay he co-authored with Jean-Claude Carrière.   The conversation will be moderated by Amir Ahmadi Arian, who has published short stories and essays in The New York Times, New York Review of Books, Paris Review, The Guardian, London Review of Books, Massachusetts Review, and elsewhere. His first novel in English, Then The Fish Swallowed Him, was published by HarperCollins in 2020. He earned a Ph.D. in comparative literature from the University of Queensland in Australia, and an MFA in creative writing from NYU.​ He teaches literature and creative writing at City College, New York.   The conversation will take place in Farsi, with English interpretation provided by Nasim Fekrat, an award-winning blogger, journalist, and photographer from Afghanistan. He has written for the BBC, CNN, Foreign Policy Magazine, the Nieman Watchdog Foundation (now Nieman Reports), and the UN. He holds a BA in political science from Dickinson College, an MA in religious studies from the University of Georgia, and an MA in anthropology from UNC Charlotte. He's currently a PhD student in the Department of Anthropology at UC Irvine with a focus on the Hazaras' struggle for equal rights and belonging within the context of Afghanistan, nationalism, migration, and the geopolitics of South Asia and the Middle East.   Literatures of Annihilation, Exile, and Resistance, launched by Azareen Van der Vliet Oloomi, is a research collective and lecture series co-sponsored by the College of Arts and Letters and the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame, and housed at the newly launched Initiative on Race and Resilience, directed by Mark Sanders, Professor of English and Africana Studies. The series focuses on contemporary literature, film, and visual art that has been shaped by revolutionary and resistance movements, decolonization, migration, class and economic warfare, communal and state-sanctioned violence, and human rights violations. We aim to theorize new modes of contemporary literary and artistic resistance across national borders and to amplify the voices of scholars, artists, and writers of color whose lived experience is instrumental in forging new alliances across formal, linguistic and national boundaries.Originally published at litofexile.nd.edu.

This event will be hosted in conjunction with the Intercollegiate Studies Institute's "Great American Storybook" conference.  Michael Anton is a lecturer and research fellow at Hillsdale College, a senior fellow at the Claremont Institute, and a former national security official in the Trump and George W. Bush administrations. He has also served in the administrations of California Governor Pete Wilson and New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.  Anton has extensive experience in the private sector and was educated at the Claremont Graduate University, St. John's College, and the University of California, Berkeley. His most recent book is The Stakes: America at the Point of No Return.  James R. Otteson is the John T. Ryan Jr. Professor of Business Ethics, the Honors Program Faculty Director, and a CCCG faculty fellow at the University of Notre Dame. He received his BA from the Program of Liberal Studies at the University of Notre Dame and his PhD in philosophy from the University of Chicago.  Otteson specializes in business ethics, political economy, the history of economic thought, and eighteenth-century moral philosophy. He has taught previously at Wake Forest University, New York University, Yeshiva University, Georgetown University, and the University of Alabama.  His books include Adam Smith’s Marketplace of Life (Cambridge, 2002), Actual Ethics (Cambridge, 2006), Adam Smith (Bloomsbury, 2013), The End of Socialism (Cambridge, 2014), The Essential Adam Smith (Fraser Institute, 2018), and Honorable Business: A Framework for Business in a Just and Humane Society (Oxford, 2019). His most recent books are The Essential David Hume (Fraser, 2021) and Seven Deadly Economic Sins (Cambridge, 2021). His just-released book is Should Wealth Be Redistributed?
