When Gen X nostalgia reinvigorated 1970s pop culture during the 1990s, the TV cartoon Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! was undoubtedly a belle of that ball. That nostalgia infused with corporate interests to ensure a Mystery Machine shirt could be purchased at Gadzooks nationwide. It also set the slow-growing seeds of a live-action film that arrived in that nostalgia's faded light with keen self-awareness to both lean into and redefine its characters and tropes, not unlike the A Pup Named Scooby-Doo 1980s reboot. In this film version, Scooby-Doo and his mystery-solving buddies Fred (Freddie Prinze Jr.), Daphne (Sarah Michelle Gellar), Velma (Linda Cardellini), and Shaggy (Matthew Lillard) have disbanded after shuttering Mystery, Inc. When each one is invited to the ominously named Spooky Island to investigate hauntings at the popular Spring Break locale, the crew ascertains whether the threats are paranormal or more earthly. On the French Polynesian island of Tahiti, the High Commissioner of the Republic and French government official De Roller (Benoît Magimel) is a calculating man with flawless manners. His somewhat broad perception of his role brings him to navigate the high end 'establishment' as well as shady venues where he mingles with the locals. As an extension of Kif-Kif Bledi's engagement on campus, the Nanovic Institute and faculty fellow Madison Mainwaring, assistant professor of French and Francophone studies, have partnered to organize both a pre-show introduction and post-show Q&A for its Kif-Kif? Transmission performance on October 13, 2024, which begins at 3:30 p.m. Founded in 2017, Kif-Kif Bledi aims to bridge the gap between social and academic spaces by preserving and sharing the richness of North African traditional dances. This initiative addresses the underrepresentation and misunderstanding of this cultural heritage in France. Faced with the decline of natural transmission at social events and family gatherings, Kif-Kif Bledi explores new methods while respecting ancestors. Lin Li is the James P. Storer Assistant Professor of Asian History at Kenyon College in the Department of Asian and Middle East Studies. Li's research and teaching center on the production of structural violence along the lines of gender, ethnicity and disability across the Japanese empire and the representation of this violence within historical memory and popular culture in the Asia-Pacific from the Cold War onward.
