This week's readings invite us to examine the role of friendship in living well, with particular attention to our often self-serving inclinations or fears of exclusion. This co-curriculum event is designed to offer a nuanced and specified discussion on one form of friendship, romantic friendship. Join Christine Emba and Moreau Peer Leaders in a conversation about romantic friendship. Christine Emba is a writer, reporter, and former columnist and member of the Editorial Board for The Washington Post. In her book Rethinking Sex: A Provocation (2022), Emba argues how consent is a good ethical floor, but a terrible ceiling. She spells out the cultural, historical, and psychological forces that have warped our idea of sex. Reaching back to the wisdom of thinkers like Thomas Aquinas and Andrea Dworkin, and drawing from sociological studies, interviews with college students, and poignant examples from her own life, Emba calls for a more humane philosophy, one that starts with consent but accounts for the very real emotional, mental, social, and political implications of sex—even, she argues, if it means saying no to certain sexual practices or challenging societal expectations altogether."...if all you want is to be in the know, your pleasure will be short-lived... you were not looking for virtue or kindness or loyalty or humour or learning or wit or any of the things that can be really enjoyed.
