A centerpiece on Notre Dame's campus, the Golden Dome was added to the Main Building in 1882 and was reguilded in 2005.
The gold leaf surface of the Dome presented a bit of a lighting challenge to engineers as light easily reflects off the surface and into the sky.

— Matt Cashore (@mattcashore) April 8, 2015To improve the lighting of the Dome the new lights were installed on the roofs of St. Edwards Hall, Washington Hall, Bronson Hall and the steeple of the Basilica. These locations improve the aiming angles and provide for better overall illumination.
Energy Efficiency
The LED lights reduce energy consumption by over 35,000 kilowatt hours per year and reduce the campus carbon footprint by approximately 12.2 tons per year.
