The South Dining Hall is home to one of three Grind2Energy (G2E) food waste systems that collects prep scraps and uneaten food that cannot be donated into its Grind2Energy (G2E) system for anaerobic digestion that is used to power a local dairy farm. Architect Ralph Adams Cram designed the dining hall to resemble a medieval guild hall. It replaced the "old kitchen" behind the Main Building where Holy Cross brothers and sisters butchered, cooked and baked since 1849, using the bounty from university farms to prepare food that was transported by wagons to the Main Building dining rooms. Student now make selections from a central food court. In 1997, an addition was built to house Reckers, a lounge-like restaurant featuring a wood-burning pizza oven.
