Fr. Hesburgh knew that a growing University needed a great library. The majestic building opened its doors on September 18, 1963 and was named Memorial Library. It was built according to modern standards, with open stacks of books, large open spaces, and eliminating internal walls. With its 13 floors, 429,780 square feet area, and a large penthouse at the top, it was the largest academic library when built.
In 1987 it was renamed for President Emeritus Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C. and still stands as one of his greatest accomplishments.
