Core Samples: A Climate Scientist’s Experiments in Politics and Motherhood

Monday, April 28, 2025 4:00–6:00 PM
  • Location
    118 DeBartolo Hall
  • Description
Join Dr. Henderson as she explores what it means to research climate science while becoming a mother, and how this ultimately led her into politics and public art.
Humanity navigates the world through stories, shaping our understanding and driving our actions.
This event, inspired by Anna Farro Henderson's insightful book, Core Samples, delves into the profound potential of narrative to galvanize action on climate change. Henderson's work, a unique blend of personal essays rooted in her experiences as a climate scientist and policy expert, reveals the human dimensions of scientific research, political negotiation, and the systemic challenges faced by women and mothers in these fields.
Through vivid storytelling – from far-flung scientific expeditions to intimate moments in labs and legislative halls – Core Samples illuminates the often-messy realities behind climate science and policy. This event will explore how embracing these authentic, human-centered narratives can bridge the gap between scientific understanding and public engagement, fostering the empathy, connection, and urgency necessary to accelerate meaningful climate action. By examining the power of personal experience, scientific discovery, and political realities as told through compelling stories, we aim to inspire new approaches to communicating climate change and mobilizing collective will for a sustainable future.
