Bogert Jr.Approximately Ages 6+, 88 minutes In English and Mandarin with English subtitlesWith unprecedented access, Surf Nation is a feature-length observational documentary that tells a story beginning in Hainan, China's southernmost province, where hundreds of athletes as young as 9 years old train as part of the Chinese National Surf team. In his new quartet, Javier Red is composing for and making music with Dakarai Barclay (trumpet), Jake Wark (tenor sax), Jeff Wheaton (bass), and Daniel Gayden (drums). The quartet serves as a vehicle for musical exploration along three lines: the rhythmic pulse and repetition rooted in West African music traditions, the creative personalities of the band members, and the continual reinvention or reinterpretation of both Javier's original compositions and music from great jazz composers such as Monk, Henderson, Coltrane, and Shorter that have a special connection with Javier's rhythmic explorations. Museum galleries will be open so you can explore the work of art paired with the performance. Series curated by Stephen and Mary Merriman of Merrimans’ Playhouse. Parking is available in the Visitor Lot immediately north of the Sculpture Park for a fee during the week (before 4:30 p.m.). Free two-hour parking is available in the Eddy Street Commons Parking Garage or along Angela Blvd. After 4:30 p.m. and on weekends, parking is free and available in any non-gated lot.
