Films to Talk AboutDirected by Sally El HosainiWith Nathalie Issa, Manal Issa, Ahmed MalekRated PG-13, 134 minutesIn English and Arabic with English subtitlesPanel discussion to follow!A scene many parents and kids know well: a youth swimming competition that pulls together striving athletes and the families who cheer them on. Here, though, the competition is in Syria, and bombs are exploding literally both outside and inside the sports facility. The juxtaposition between childhood sports and war is one often used to illustrate lost innocence, and The Swimmers moves that genre forward by telling the true story of Yusra Mardini, whose drive to compete in the Olympics pushes her and her sister out of Syria. At the cross-section of a biopic and the refugee experience, The Swimmers also allows for an experience to reflect on forced determination, success, and the fallout of state violence.
