Annual Naughton Fellowships are open for applications, with stipends raised for students
The University of Notre Dame has opened its annual competition for The Naughton Fellowships. The Naughton Fellowship program provides opportunities for students and faculty from some of Ireland's leading research universities and the University of Notre Dame to experience international education in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) disciplines.
This year, student stipends will be raised in order to reflect the increased cost of living. Undergraduate students on the REU program, either going to Ireland or South Bend, will now receive $9,000 USD, while master's students going to Ireland will now receive $30,000 USD.
Speaking about the program, Brian Baker, Coleman Professor of Life Sciences and Chair of The Naughton Fellowship Committee, said, "We are committed to ensuring that a Naughton Fellowship is accessible to all and increasing the stipends going forward is a reflection of that commitment. We are grateful for the University's well-stewarded resources that allow us to make this happen."
Applications are now encouraged in the following programs:
Research Experience for Undergraduates
Ten-week research experiences for ND students are available at Dublin City University (DCU), Trinity College Dublin (TCD), University College Cork (UCC), University College Dublin (UCD), and the University of Galway (UG). Fellowships include airfare, accommodation, health insurance, a stipend, and cultural enrichment programming. All applications are due by Friday, December 13, 2024.
Ten-week research experiences for Irish students from DCU, TCD, UCC, UCD, and UG are available at ND. Fellowships include a stipend for travel and living expenses. To be considered, please contact your faculty supervisor in Ireland, as they will select students to put forward. All student names must be submitted by Friday, December 13, 2024.
ND students can apply for an instructional (taught) or research master’s degree at DCU, TCD, UCC, UCD, or UG. Fellowships include a full tuition waiver, as well as a stipend for living expenses, plus cultural enrichment programming. All applications are due by Tuesday, January 28, 2025.
Irish students from DCU, TCD, UCC, UCD, or UG can apply for a master’s degree in Notre Dame’s Engineering, Science, and Technology Entrepreneurship Excellence Master’s (ESTEEM) Program. Fellowships include a full tuition waiver, a full health insurance subsidy for the sponsored student insurance plan, and a stipend for living expenses, plus access to cultural enrichment programming. All applications are due by Tuesday, January 28, 2025.
This program aims to catalyze and support faculty collaborations and student training, in order to advance collaborative research and foster deeper and stronger ties between Irish research institutions, DCU, TCD, UCC, UCD, or UG and ND, as well as between the two countries. All applications are due by Friday, April 11, 2025.

About The Naughton Fellowships
The Naughton Fellowships allow researchers with a background in, or aptitude for, STEM fields to experience international research and educational opportunities through a funded exchange program involving the University of Notre Dame and some of Ireland’s leading research universities. Irish undergraduates and master’s students can come to Notre Dame on the fellowship, while Notre Dame undergraduates and master’s students can travel to Ireland to study and complete research. Faculty from the two countries can also participate in funded research collaborations.
