The Peace Corps is a U.S. Government agency that focuses on international service and development by sending trained volunteers abroad to work alongside community members on locally prioritized projects. Volunteers serve for two years, focusing on projects in either Agriculture, Community Economic Development, Education, Environment, Health, or Youth Development. The Peace Corps provides three months of in-country training for volunteers and provides a stipend that covers the cost of food, transportation, communication, and housing. While in service, volunteers get full medical and dental care, student loan assistance, and earn a Volunteer Service Award that totals up to $10,800 pre-tax. After service, volunteers qualify for specialized scholarships for graduate school, hiring advantages for federal jobs, and access to one of the strongest networks out there.   Beyond just the dry benefits of Peace Corps service, you get to do some truly amazing work and are put in an environment where you are really able to grow as a person. Because the Peace Corps does most of its work in non-English speaking communities, applicants who already have experience with foreign language learning, are highly highly valued.
