The Delirium of the Brave: Sacrifice for the Soul of the Irish Nation explores how failed rebellions against British rule inspired a powerful legacy of Irish patriotism, cultural revival, and the pursuit of independence. Drawn from Hesburgh Libraries' world-class Irish Studies collection in Rare Books and Special Collections and the University Archives, the exhibit features items that document the heroes, martyrs, and idealistic men and women who helped forge modern Ireland.

Pearse, August 1915 In 1803, Robert Emmet led a failed rebellion to overthrow British rule in Ireland. In 1848, a group called Young Ireland staged a brief revolt that was hastily crushed. The Fenian Brotherhood invaded British North America in 1866, and the IRB organized a series of unsuccessful raids in Ireland the following year. On Easter Monday, 1916, a small group of Irish insurgents launched a rebellion in Dublin that was quashed in under a week. While these four attempts to create an independent Ireland may have failed, they each gave rise to a powerful romantic narrative that captivated the spirits of the Irish at home and abroad. Out of sacrifice and tragedy sprang patriotic verse, defiant journalism, cultural revival, and eventually, Irish freedom from British rule. This exhibit features items from Rare Books and Special Collections and the University Archives that document the heroes, martyrs, and idealistic men and women who forged modern Ireland.

Members of the tri-campus community are invited to attend a conversation and book reading with New York Times best-selling author Rev. James Martin, S.J., editor-at-large at America Magazine. The event will begin with a conversation between Fr. Martin and Kathleen Sprows Cummings, director of the Global Catholic Research Initiative and John A. O’Brien Collegiate Professor of American Studies and History. Following their discussion, Fr. Martin will read excerpts from his newest book, Work in Progress: Confessions of a busboy, dishwasher, caddy, usher, factory worker, bank teller, corporate tool, and priest. Copies of the book will be available for sale immediately following the event. This event is free, but ticketed. Tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center Ticket Office one hour prior.
